Vicarious (or Second Hand) trauma is a process of change resulting from empathetic engagement with trauma survivors. Anyone who engages empathetically with survivors of traumatic incidents, torture, and material relating to their trauma, is potentially affected, including health professionals, volunteers and researchers. Please be aware of the signs and keep an eye on your fellow volunteers, if they are showing any signs. Second Hand trauma is very real! And keep in mind: You can’t help others, if you are too tired or too traumatized to function properly.

Here you can register, if you have an apartment, a room or bigger housing opportunity (e.g. a house, a hotel,…) you would like to offer refugees long term. The BBU (Bundesagentur für Betreuungs- und Unterstützungsleistungen) is an organization, that works throughout the whole of Austria. Disclaimer: The BBU is part of the Austrian Interior Ministry.
Here you can register, if you have an apartment or room you would like to offer refugees for longer than a month. No short term accomodation!
If you would like to volunteer in Vienna, you can register here. You can see directly, when and where volunteers are needed and sign up for a shift at one of the shelters.
