On February 26, 2022, Michael Maier flew from Germany to the Romanian – Ukrainian border. Since then, he has helped over 1,000 Ukrainians with accommodation, medicine, food, clothes and transport from Ukraine to Romania, Republic of Moldova and Germany. Michael has also helped orphans. Every day, convoys of 10 to 25 vehicles travel to several locations on the Ukrainian border to bring people in need of protection to pre-selected host families in a single trip without detours. The main focus is on women, children and seniors traveling alone. On this way also medicines, foodstuffs as well as specifically requested relief supplies are brought to the borders. Drivers are always needed, as well as host families who can offer refugees a place to stay.

Croatia’s national passenger transport, HŽPP, provides free transport to Ukrainian citizens on all routes in the national railway traffic of the Republic of Croatia in the 2nd class of trains. Free tickets for Ukrainian citizens can be issued at the ticket office or on the train by presenting a Ukrainian passport, identity card or a decision on approval of entry into the Republic of Croatia.
There is a critical gap in Western support of Ukrainians seeking safe refuge from war. Few who offer assistance dare go INSIDE Ukraine. Yet the need is huge. Many Ukrainians set out on foot.
